Former Elle.com executive editor Amina Akhtar has landed at theFashionSpot, where she will be taking over as editorial director.

"TheFashionSpot is an essential fashion industry source which is why I was drawn to this position," Akhtar said. "I plan to have vibrant original content and a chic design that will please our very sophisticated and savvy readers. The community on our site is like no other."

Akhtar had also previously worked at Vogue as the digital editions editor and was New York magazine's fashion editor, where she helped launch its online fashion portals including The Cut. She was notoriously laid off from her Elle.com post last year.

TheFashionSpot may not be a household name like the other publications Akhtar has worked at, but it's grown to 2.5 million unique visitors and 70,000 invitation-only forum members since it launched in July 2001. Parent company TotallyHer Media added in Akhtar's hiring announcement that it is increasing financial support for the fashion site, including bolstering the editorial team.
